Previously we have demonstrated a brain computer interface (BCI) system with 1-D movement which was controlled by spontaneously active somatosensory cortex neuron for rat to quench thirstiness. Here we present a newly developed 3-D movement BCI system allowing six different movement directions (left, right, forward, backward, up and down). An i80196 microprocessor receiving data from driving parts and sensing parts by universal asynchronous receiver-transmitters (UART) appropriately controls three stepping motors actuating the axes. Driving parts consisted of three stepping motors (PK245, VEXTA Oriental Motor), timing belts, ball bearings and X, Y, Z axes. Animal and a target point are monitored from sensors. The software written with the assembly and the C++ languages is real-time, in the sense that its operation must be synchronized with events occurring in the physical system and with time. It contains video tracking part and user interface part, too. Animal?s behavior is monitored with a camera. This system will be operated in real-time by animal?s brain activity to allow fine and multiple controls of target in 3-D space for fulfilling animal?s volition.
